One of the earlier established cities, Bikaner still displays its ancient opulence through palaces and forts, built of red sandstone, that have withstood the passage of time. The city boasts of some of the world’s best riding camels and is aptly nicknamed ‘camel country’. It is also home to one of the world’s largest camel research and breeding farms; as well as being known for having its own unique temple dedicated to Karni Mata at Deshnok, called the Rats Temple.
Junagarh Fort
Junagarh Fort, built in 1588 AD by Raja Rai Singh, remains impregnable, never having been captured. This formidable bastion in Bikaner houses magnificent palaces and reflects the prowess of Emperor Akbar’s general.
Lakshmi Niwas Palace
Laxmi Niwas Palace, once the residence of Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner, was built between 1898 and 1902 by British architect Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. This Indo-Saracenic style structure is now a luxury hotel.
Lalgarh Palace
Maharaja Ganga Singh commissioned the construction of this majestic palace, entirely made of red sandstone. Built in 1902, it commemorates his father, Maharaja Lal Singh, showcasing exquisite architectural marvel.
Karni Mata Temple
The Karni Mata Temple in Deshnok features a beautiful structure of stone and marble, housing an image of Karni Mata adorned with a ‘mukut’ (tiara) and garlands. It also includes images of her sisters and the sisters of Avad Mata.
Shri Laxminath Temple
The rulers of Bikaner revered Lord Laxminathji (Lord Vishnu) as the true sovereign of Bikaner, considering themselves as his Deewans or Ministers. This marble and red stone temple was built to house Lord Laxminath’s throne.
Government Museum
Described as the premier museum in the state, it showcases a wealth of archaeological artifacts from the Harappa and early Gupta periods. Sections include paintings, arts and crafts, woven carpets, and clay pottery.
Jain Temple Bhandsar
The Jain Temple Bhandasar, dating back to the 15th century, is dedicated to the 5th Tirthankar, Sumatinathji, who achieved nirvana and liberated others from the cycle of life.
Shiv Bari Temple
Located only 6 kilometers from Bikaner, this Shiva temple is encircled by a high wall. Constructed in the 19th century by Maharaja Doongar Singh to honor his father.
Kodamdesar Temple
Kodamdesar Temple, 24 kilometers from Bikaner, was established by Rao Bikaji within three years of arriving from Jodhpur. It was originally chosen as the foundation site for Bikaner.
